The Egyptian Customs Authority has settled the debate over the initiative that let Egyptians living abroad import cars free of customs duty. Its head, Ahmed Amoui, said reports of registration reopening are "incorrect" and that there are no official decisions or discussions to revive it.

He explained that the initiative has ended; citizens who registered in earlier windows keep the right to complete import procedures within the set period. Any reopening would require new government and legislative decisions outside the Authority's remit.

The initiative was launched in 2022, reopened in October 2023 under Law 174 of 2023 and closed to new registrations in April 2024. About 590,000 citizens registered, of whom around 265,000 paid the required deposits in foreign currency.
